New head and hands to guide Body Language

66

Body Language, “A thinking adult store," and a Cleveland institution since 1984, is changing owners in October. Started by the late Linus Herrell, Body Language was established as a unique shop for gays and lesbians, offering "erotic hardware and romantic software."

In 1990, when Herrell became ill, his longtime companion Steve Schochet took over, continuing and expanding on the store's dedication to serving the community.

The new owner, Paul Zeitzew, promises to carry on their tradition as well as build on their expertise.

Over the years, the leather room and videos have been focal points. As part of the expansion program, both of these departments will have more merchandise added and have some specials as time dictates. Another area that will be enlarged is in nongraphic books. "There is a wealth of good gay and lesbian fiction out there, and we are going to carry as much as we can," Zeitzew

said. With the change in ownership, patrons can expect to see more periodicals catering to ethnic groups, women, and new classifications such as gay-lesbian jewelry.

Later this month a "community corner" will be inaugurated. In this space, organizations in the lesbian and gay sector are invited to send their newsletters, posters, announcements and whatever is relevant to their activities.

Zeitzew, a Philadelphia native, moved to Cleveland eight years ago via several cities, most recently Chicago. He says, "seven cities, thirteen houses, one wife and two daughters, three grandchildren of assorted genders, several boyfriends (of assorted genders)... it's time to settle down. Cleveland has Body Language, a world class symphony, and a gay and lesbian synagogue. So why not here?"

Body Language is at 3291 W. 115th St, just north of Lorain Ave. in Cleveland. Call 251-3330.

OBITUARY

William A. Raymond, 1964-1993

Bill Raymond was born and raised in the Cleveland area, a product of the South Euclid-Lyndhurst school system, and was graduated from Brush High School and the Cleveland Institute of Art.

His career path included the May Company and Ohio Savings Bank in Cleveland and several endeavors in New York City, particularly That New Magazine, Inc., publishers of Christopher Street and the New York Native. Additional positions included Saks Fifth Avenue, both in New York City and Cleveland. Upon his return to Cleveland, he became involved in several programs within the gay community that pertain to consciousness-raising issues as well as AIDS issues.

Diagnosed with HIV in 1986, it became full-blown AIDS in January of this year. He was blessed to have been in complete control of his situation until the very end and passed peacefully in his sleep. His loving and nurturing family was supportive of him throughout the progression of his illness,

exhibiting unconditional love of him because of who he was to them.

Bill will be missed by all of us whose lives he touched. He had a good sense of self and became a symbol of courage in the face of adversity to all who knew him. ✓
